UK and Germany Bring Kensington Treaty Into Force in Berlin
UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham is visiting Berlin, Germany, to hold talks with Chancellor Friedrich Merz and mark the entry into force of a new bilateral treaty. The Kensington Treaty was signed in London in July 2025, and Burnham and Merz exchanged ratification documents in Berlin, bringing it into force.
The meeting also announced a partnership to counter hybrid threats and plans for cooperation on industrial technology. Burnham said the UK and Germany would face threats together. He also said he was committed to “see if we can bring the UK closer to Europe,” ahead of a UK-EU summit due next month.
