UK Byelection Could Push Starmer to Quit

A byelection is taking place in Makerfield in the UK. Andy Burnham wants to win the seat.

Burnham is currently the Labour mayor of Greater Manchester. The sitting MP Josh Simons gave up his seat so Burnham could stand.

Labour rules say leadership candidates must be members of parliament. If Burnham wins the seat he could pressure Prime Minister Keir Starmer to quit.

Former Labour minister David Blunkett has said Starmer should step down after the byelection. Burnham has also brought in top economists ahead of a possible leadership run.

The result is expected around 3am. If Burnham wins he would have to leave his mayor role. Deputy mayor Paul Dennett would then serve as acting mayor until a new vote is held.

Klear Note UK Labour Party rules require leadership candidates to be MPs. Byelections happen when an MP seat becomes vacant. Starmer is the current Prime Minister.
