UK Health Chief Plans to Quit and Challenge Starmer

Wes Streeting plans to quit as UK health secretary. He wants to challenge Prime Minister Keir Starmer for the Labour Party leadership.

His allies told The Times he is ready to go ahead. They say nomination papers are already being prepared.

Starmer met with Streeting on Wednesday 13 May. The meeting lasted less than 20 minutes.

It took place before the King's Speech. Streeting's allies say deep frustration with Starmer's leadership is driving the challenge.

But Downing Street insiders say Streeting does not yet have support from the required 81 MPs. His allies say he plans to go ahead anyway.

The crisis follows Labour's heavy losses in local elections. Over 80 MPs have called for Starmer to resign. Four junior ministers have already quit.

Klear Note Labour Party leaders need 81 MP votes to face a leadership challenge. Local elections in May 2026 saw Labour lose many seats. This pressure has sparked calls for Starmer to step down.
