UK Imposes New Iran Sanctions Over Fairford Base Incident
The Financial Times reports the UK has imposed new sanctions on Iran. The Associated Press says two Iranians are among those sanctioned.
One is a counterespionage chief in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. The sanctions are over threats to Fairford that happened late last month.
The UK assessed Iran was likely to have coordinated the incident. The prime minister said the Islamic Revolutionary Guard almost certainly directed it.
He also told lawmakers more sanctions were coming. They would target Iran's government and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
Miliband summoned Iran's ambassador. He said Britain "won't tolerate threats on our soil." Burnham said the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps was almost certainly behind threats.
Iran denies involvement. The UK had allowed US forces to use Fairford for strikes.
It called them defensive strikes on Iranian missiles. Police arrested seven men in connection with the case. All seven were released on bail and none had been charged yet.
