UK Plans Social Media Ban for Under-16s
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer wants to ban social media for children under 16. The ban must be approved by Parliament first.
Starmer hopes the law will pass before Christmas 2026. If approved it would start in spring 2027.
But lawmakers voted against a similar ban in March 2026. That makes passing the law harder this time.
Starmer said social media makes children unhappy and unsafe. He admitted some teenagers will find ways around the rules.
The ban could cover Snapchat, TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, Facebook and X. Reports say the ban would also stop strangers from messaging children. Leaders are also looking at overnight limits and breaks in endless scrolling for under-18s. Australia, Spain, Greece and Slovenia have brought in similar bans.
Klear Note — Several countries have banned social media for young teens. Australia, Spain, Greece, and Slovenia passed similar laws recently. UK lawmakers rejected this ban idea just three months ago.
