UK Prime Minister Starmer Expected to Resign Monday
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer is expected to announce his resignation on Monday. He has faced pressure from Labour MPs, senior ministers, party donors and union leaders.
Business Secretary Peter Kyle said on Sunday that Starmer was reflecting on "political realities." This was seen as a sign of growing pressure on Starmer to quit. Labour lost over 1,100 council seats in the May 2026 local elections.
Over 95 Labour MPs had asked Starmer to resign or set a leaving date by mid-May. Several politicians are seen as possible replacements to lead the Labour Party.
Andy Burnham is among the leading candidates. He won a by-election on 18 June 2026 with 54.8% of the vote. Other reported candidates include David Lammy, Wes Streeting and Angela Rayner.
Klear Note — Labour lost over 1,100 council seats in May 2026 local elections. This poor result increased pressure on Starmer to step down as party leader.
