UK Prime Minister Starmer Faces Growing Pressure to Resign

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has said he will stay and fight any leadership challenge. An ally told the BBC that Starmer was thinking through the political situation.

The ally said things had changed compared to last week. US President Donald Trump said Starmer would step down.

But no confirmation came from Starmer's office. A Cabinet member said it would be foolish to pretend there was no threat to his position.

Yet another Cabinet member said he had no information suggesting Starmer might quit. That member said newspaper reports about a resignation were speculation.

The Observer reported on Saturday that Starmer had decided his position was no longer workable. The report said he spoke with senior Cabinet ministers, donors and union leaders.

It said he could resign as soon as Monday 22 June. Andy Burnham won a by-election on 18 June 2026.

This cleared the way for a formal leadership challenge. Sources say Burnham is seen as the most likely person to replace Starmer.
