UK Takes Over British Steel Jingye Wants Payment
The UK government has officially taken over British Steel. This happened through a new law passed on July 16 2026.
The goal is to stop the country's last major steel plant from closing. Jingye Group bought British Steel in 2020.
Jingye now says it deserves payment for the takeover. The company says it loses about £700000 a day.
Jingye is reportedly asking for up to £1 billion. Reports say Jingye claims the UK offered almost no payment.
Jingye also reportedly says the takeover breaks international investment rules. The UK government has suggested it may limit or refuse payment.
The government had already spent £377 million running British Steel by end of January. Costs may go over £600 million by June.
They could reach £1.5 billion by 2028 according to reports. The dispute is about the terms of the takeover from its Chinese owner.
