UN to Vote on Strait Shipping Protection

The United Nations Security Council will vote Friday on a resolution. The resolution allows defensive action to protect ships in the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran restricted shipping there after United States and Israeli strikes. A month-old Middle East war triggered those strikes.

Bahrain brought the resolution to the Security Council. China and Russia opposed it, so Bahrain changed it. The updated version focuses on reopening the strait.

Klear Note The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow waterway between Iran and Oman. About one-third of world's oil passes through it. When shipping closes, global oil prices rise and economies suffer.
