UNESCO Adds D-Day Beaches and Mount Olympus to Heritage List
France's D-Day beaches in Normandy were added to the World Heritage List. Mount Olympus in Greece was also added.
A United Nations committee approved the additions. The meeting took place in Busan, South Korea, on Sunday.
The D-Day beaches mark the 1944 Allied invasion in World War Two. Mount Olympus is Greece's highest mountain.
It is tied to ancient Greek myths. Its listing ended a 12-year campaign by Greece.
France's UNESCO representative Ahlem Gharbi said the Normandy honor matters more now. She pointed to current global tensions.
The committee is meeting in Busan through Wednesday. It is part of its 48th yearly session.
The group also added other sites this week. These include Japan's ancient capitals Asuka and Fujiwara.
It also added South Sudan's Boma-Badingilo Migratory Landscape. This is South Sudan's first World Heritage site.
