US Cancels Brazil Ambassador's Visa in Dispute

The White House canceled the visa of Maria Luiza Ribeiro Viotti. She is Brazil's ambassador to the United States.

The move came after actions by Brazil. Brazil had delayed approval of the new US ambassador nominee to Brasilia.

Brazil also denied visas to several US diplomats. Reports say two senior State Department officials were denied visas.

One was Riley Barnes. They had wanted to visit Brazil before its elections.

Viotti remains in the United States for now. Her visa could be restored if Brazil approves the US nominee.

That nominee is Daniel Perez, chosen in June. Reports say Brazil will not act on his approval until after its October 4 election.

The dispute adds to other tensions between the two countries. These include US tariffs on Brazil.

They also include the US naming Brazilian gangs as terrorist groups. The visa cancellation marks a further rise in tensions.
