US House Censures North Carolina Republican Chuck Edwards

The US House censured North Carolina Republican Rep.

Chuck Edwards. Lawmakers voted 413 to 2 on the censure.

Nearly all House Republicans joined Democrats in the vote. A bipartisan ethics committee investigated his conduct with staffers.

The committee found he gave female staffers lavish gifts. He invited them to private dinners and trips.

He also wrote them poetry and sent late-night texts. The committee said he created a hostile work environment.

It found no evidence of sexual activity or explicit requests. Edwards denied wrongdoing and denied sexual harassment.

But he apologized to the two women and his family. He admitted making the staffers uncomfortable and using poor judgment.

The women previously worked for Edwards as a state senator. Censure does not remove Edwards from the House. He later ended his campaign for reelection.
