US Indictment Adds Torture-Conspiracy Charge Against Maduro

U.S. prosecutors have filed a new indictment charging former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro with conspiracy to commit torture. The indictment also names his wife, Flores, in a charge concerning alleged torture.

The new charge concerns the alleged torture of U.S. citizens held in Venezuela while Maduro was in power, the BBC reported. NPR reported that the conspiracy allegation involved Maduro's fellow citizens as well as Americans.

According to the Associated Press, the indictment alleges torture and arbitrary detention were used to repress political opposition and says the victims included three unnamed U.S. citizens. NPR said the new accusation adds to drugs and weapons charges Maduro already faced.
