US-Iran Ceasefire Close to Collapse Over Key Disputes
A ceasefire between the US and Iran is close to breaking down. Pakistani mediators are working hard to keep the truce alive.
Pakistan helped broker the ceasefire on 8 April 2026 after nearly three months of fighting. But the deal has not held firmly.
Trump said the truce was on 'massive life support' on 12 May 2026. Two big disputes are blocking a lasting peace deal.
The first is what Iran should do with its highly enriched uranium. The US wants Iran to export it.
The second is who controls the Strait of Hormuz. Iran wants full control and war payments from the US.
The US Navy has blocked the Strait. Oil prices have risen because the Strait remains closed to shipping.
Qatar has also backed Pakistan's efforts to mediate. Israel and Iran each fear the other is about to launch a surprise attack. This adds more pressure to the already strained talks.
