US Judge Pauses Trump Border Wall Work in Texas

A US judge temporarily blocked border wall work in Big Bend, Texas. The ruling stops the Trump administration from building or expanding the wall.

It also covers other infrastructure there. Judge Kathleen Cardone ruled after a Friday hearing in El Paso, Texas.

The order blocks ground-disturbing work while a lawsuit continues. The ruling sets back plans for hundreds of miles of barriers.

Those plans had drawn local opposition. The Center for Biological Diversity filed the lawsuit in April.

It acts for a nonprofit focused on historic churches. It also acts for a local river guide and landowner.

The plaintiffs argue the government lacked authority for the project. Cardone found their claims likely to succeed on at least one point.

Advocates, politicians and protesters opposed park roads and vehicle barriers. The government says the barriers are needed for border control.

It also says they protect the park from possible cartel activity. President Donald Trump long promised the border wall in his campaigns.
