US Judge Sets 2028 Trial Date for 9/11 Suspect

A US military judge set a trial date. The trial will start June 5 2028.

Khalid Sheikh Mohammed faces trial then. He is accused of plotting the September 11 attacks.

Three co-defendants will be tried with him. Prosecutors wanted the trial to start in January 2027.

The judge chose a later date instead. This was due to disputes over evidence.

Other pretrial deadlines also caused delays. Unresolved issues could push the date back further.

The defendants are held at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba. A US military commission is handling the case.

Last summer a federal appeals court rejected his plea deal. The deal would have let him avoid a death penalty trial.

Klear Note — The rejected plea deal means prosecutors are still pursuing a death-penalty trial.
