US Justice Department Drops Tax Claims Against Trump
The US Justice Department agreed not to pursue tax claims against President Trump. The deal also covers his family and the Trump Organisation.
A separate addition was signed by Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche on Tuesday. It was added to the original Monday settlement.
It stops the IRS from pursuing any tax audits or claims against Trump and his family. The government also gave Trump a formal apology as part of the deal.
After the agreement Trump and his sons Eric and Donald Jr. dropped their $10 billion lawsuit against the IRS. That lawsuit was filed in January over leaked tax returns.
The deal was reached just before a court deadline. That deadline would have forced the government to answer questions about conflicts of interest.
A judge closed the case after the Trumps moved to drop their suit. The day before the agreement the Justice Department set up a $1.8 billion fund.
It is called the Anti-Weaponization Fund. Anyone who claims to have been unfairly investigated can apply. But critics have called it a fund for Trump allies.
