US Justice Department Subpoenas New York Times Journalists Over Air Force One Report
The Trump administration has subpoenaed four New York Times journalists. A subpoena is a legal order to testify.
The journalists are Julian Barnes Eric Lipton Tyler Pager and Eric Schmitt. The order came after they reported on security issues with Trump's new Air Force One plane.
Qatar gave Trump that plane as a gift. The report said Trump switched to an older Air Force One jet instead.
It said Secret Service agents had security concerns about the new plane. Reports say FBI Director Kash Patel met with White House officials before the subpoenas were issued.
Patel also reportedly spoke with Trump about the leak investigation. The journalists must testify before a federal grand jury in Manhattan.
That testimony must happen five days after the subpoenas were issued. New York Times lawyer David McCraw called the move a "brazen act." He warned it could intimidate journalists.
The White House has denied any security problems with the new jet. Press secretary Steven Cheung called the plane "state-of-the-art."
