US Lifts Export Ban on Anthropic AI Models
The US Department of Commerce lifted export controls on Anthropic's Fable 5 and Mythos 5 AI models on June 30. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick sent a letter to Anthropic co-founder Tom Brown to confirm the lift.
The controls had been in place for about 18 days. They began on June 12 when the Bureau of Industry and Security ordered the suspension.
Reports say the controls were triggered by a security flaw found in Fable 5. Amazon and NSA reviewers flagged the flaw.
Anthropic agreed to conditions to get the controls lifted. These include finding security risks early and telling the government about harmful activity.
The lifting of the ban puts Anthropic back on track for an IPO. Washington has increased oversight of new AI models to find potential threats.
Leaders say advanced AI could be misused by military or intelligence agencies in China, Russia or other countries. Rival company OpenAI also agreed to US government requests to limit its GPT-5.6 model release. This suggests broad government oversight of advanced AI is now standard across the industry.
