US Places New Tariffs on Up to 80 Countries
The Trump administration has placed new tariffs on many countries. The new tariffs cover between 60 and 80 nations.
Rates range from about 10% to 12.5%. The tariffs target countries that failed to stop imports made with forced labor.
The tariffs took effect shortly after midnight Friday. They were placed under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974.
US trade leaders said these countries failed to enforce bans on forced-labor goods. The new tariffs replace temporary levies that were set to expire.
Those temporary tariffs were placed under Section 122. They followed a Supreme Court decision in February.
That decision struck down the administration's earlier broad trade tariffs. The new tariffs focus on forced labor concerns instead of broad trade limits.
