US Puts Ban on $1 Billion in Canadian Imports

US restrictions on Canadian imports began Tuesday. The ban covers nearly $1 billion in goods.

This includes alcohol, dairy products and motorcycles. The move escalated a trade dispute between the longtime allies.

Trump said he expects Canada to accept trade demands soon. But Canadian officials said they will not sign a bad deal.

The two countries trade about $880 billion yearly. These restrictions cover only a small part of that trade.

One analyst said the standoff could last months instead of weeks. The US already added 50% tariffs on $20 billion in Canadian goods.

Canada responded with its own tariffs. Trump said the new ban punishes Canada for its retaliation. The dispute could also put the USMCA trade deal at risk.
