The US military hit dozens of Revolutionary Guard targets in Iran on Thursday. The Revolutionary Guard is Iran's elite military force.

The strikes were in response to Iran's attack on American forces in Jordan. Jordan said it shot down five missiles fired by Iran during that attack.

The US strikes came after a nearly week-long pause in fighting. That pause had raised hopes for peace talks.

Those hopes ended when strikes started again. President Trump had earlier said he would hit Iran hard. He said this after Iran fired missiles at Jordan.

Iran said it would punish the United States on Thursday. This came after the US strikes.

Iran also targeted a building in northern Kuwait. This was part of growing attacks across the Middle East.

Reports say the Kuwait strike killed a worker. It also badly damaged the building.

A separate strike on Qeshm Island in Iran reportedly killed three people. Two more were wounded there.

The fighting also included US and Saudi strikes on Iran-backed fighters in Iraq. Reports say those strikes killed at least 20 fighters.

Several Iranian military advisers were also killed. The US Central Command called the operation a heavy wave of strikes.

It targeted command centers, missile sites, drone facilities and coastal watch posts. The operation reportedly ran from 8pm Wednesday to 10pm Thursday US eastern time.

A gas tanker called the Al Areesh left the Strait of Hormuz overnight Thursday. The tanker is controlled by the energy company QatarEnergy.

It was the first such ship tracked leaving the waterway since July 11. This shows how the conflict is affecting regional shipping and energy markets.
