US Sanctions ICC; EU Pledges Support

The United States imposed sanctions on the International Criminal Court (ICC), with officials announcing the measures on October 9, 2026, just hours after the Nobel Peace Prize committee awarded its annual honor to a former judge of the court. The sanctions are aimed at restricting the tribunal’s resources and ability to operate.

They cut off the ICC from U.S. financial services, technology companies and U.S. dollars, while businesses have six months to wind down dealings with the court. The ICC accused officials in Donald Trump’s administration of attempting to “obstruct the course of justice” and called the sanctions “an assault” on the international legal order.

The European Union said it was “ready to take any necessary measures” to enable the court to carry out its work. The Trump administration has pursued a campaign to dismantle the ICC, which it has described as a “rogue” tribunal.

It has said the United States “doesn’t need” the court and accused it of politicization and unfairly targeting Americans with war-crime charges. The institution-wide measures follow earlier U.S. sanctions on ICC judges and prosecutors. Washington’s objections have included the court’s arrest warrants for Israeli officials and its now-closed investigation into U.S. soldiers’ actions in Afghanistan.
