US Senate to Hold Hearing for New Intelligence Chief
Jay Clayton will face US senators on Wednesday morning. He is the top federal prosecutor for southern New York.
The hearing is about a new job for him. He could become the nation's next intelligence chief.
Clayton would replace Bill Pulte. President Trump made Pulte acting intelligence chief last month.
That move caused anger among lawmakers. Trump had delayed Clayton's hearing last month using a social media post.
The hearing was only set again recently. Republicans and some Democrats want to confirm Clayton quickly.
Pulte is a former housing official. He has no known experience in intelligence work.
Reports say Pulte used his post to target people seen as opponents of Trump. Democrats worry Trump's team could use spy agencies to affect the midterm elections.
They are expected to question Clayton about this concern. Trump also plans a major speech Thursday night about elections.
Clayton's confirmation could help renew a surveillance law called FISA Section 702. That law stalled last month over Pulte's appointment. It expired in June.
