Two Republican senators pressed the Justice Department on Wednesday. They want a written commitment to kill an 'anti-weaponization' fund.

They also want to restrict tax audit immunity for President Donald Trump and his family. This created a setback for attorney general nominee Todd Blanche's confirmation path.

Sen. John Cornyn of Texas and Sen. Thom Tillis accused Blanche of refusing to put his promises on paper. The promises concern killing aspects of a deal Blanche cut to settle Trump's suit against the IRS.

Cornyn said the Justice Department has failed to satisfy his concerns. His concerns are about the deal shielding Trump and others from IRS tax audits.

A seven-figure settlement was announced two days before a scheduled Senate committee vote on Blanche's nomination. The senators have not blocked the nomination outright.

They are withholding support pending written commitments. The Senate Judiciary Committee vote was still scheduled for Thursday, with the outcome uncertain.

Reports say the 'anti-weaponization' fund at issue is worth $1.8 billion. Cornyn said on the matter, "Fake news alert: there is no 'deal' on Blanche nom." Reports say Cornyn twice called off scheduled meetings with Blanche.

Neither Cornyn nor Tillis is up for re-election in November. Reports say this has emboldened their pushback against Trump.
