US Social Security Benefits to Rise 3.6% in 2027
The Social Security Administration announced Wednesday a 3.6% rise in 2027. The increase is called a cost-of-living adjustment.
The increase covers Social Security and Supplemental Security Income payments. Supplemental Security Income is for older adults and people with disabilities.
The Social Security part covers retirement, survivor and disability benefits. The agency said nearly 72 million Social Security recipients will get it.
The raise starts in January 2027. About 7.3 million Supplemental Security Income recipients are set to get more.
Their higher payments begin December 31 2026. Estimates of the average monthly increase differ by source.
CNBC and ABC News said retirement checks will rise $75 a month. MSNBC reported about $70 a month for individual retirement benefits. The 2027 adjustment will be the largest since 2023.
