US Supreme Court to Review Government Efficiency Records Dispute
The US Supreme Court agreed today to hear the Trump administration's appeal. The case involves records from Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency.
Taking the case does not decide the main question. The question is whether it must follow the Freedom of Information Act.
The case began with a lawsuit from a nonprofit watchdog group. The group is called Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington.
It sued the department for access to its records. The group argued the department should follow the Freedom of Information Act.
Lower courts allowed the group's limited requests for information. The group says the department is a federal agency.
The Trump administration argues the department is a presidential advisory body. The administration says it is exempt from that law.
The administration has tried to keep these records from being made public. The Supreme Court earlier stepped in during June 2025.
It narrowed a district judge's order for department records. It also sided with the administration.
