Virginia Votes to Change Election Maps

Virginia voters approved a new redistricting measure. Redistricting means redrawing the maps used to decide elections.

The new maps could help Democrats win up to 4 more seats in the US House. Currently Virginia sends 6 Democrats and 5 Republicans to the House.

The new maps aim to give Democrats an edge in 10 of Virginia's 11 districts. But the Virginia Supreme Court is still reviewing legal challenges.

Those challenges could stop the maps from taking effect. Republicans said a lack of national support caused their loss. They also pledged to keep fighting the outcome in court.

Klear Note Redistricting happens every 10 years after the census. New maps can shift which party wins elections in each district.
