White House Expands Taxpayer-Funded Trump Ads Before Midterms

The White House expanded a taxpayer-funded ad campaign supporting Donald Trump. This is happening before the November midterm elections.

TV ads featuring Trump are now running nationally. The expansion raised bipartisan questions about the ads.

Lawmakers are asking if the ads break rules on taxpayer-funded publicity. Republican Senator John Kennedy criticized the spending.

He told CBS News on Sunday there should be a rule against it. Kennedy also said the spending was probably illegal.

He said the White House sees the issue differently. A Democratic lawmaker claimed government workers who made the ad may have broken the Hatch Act.

That claim has not been confirmed. Earlier this year Kennedy questioned former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.

That was about a separate $220 million taxpayer-funded ad campaign. Noem appeared prominently in those ads.
