Xi Meets Taiwan Opposition Leader
China's leader Xi Jinping met Taiwan's opposition leader Cheng Li-wun. Cheng leads the Kuomintang party, which supports closer ties with China.
This was their first meeting in over a decade. Xi said Taiwan must not become independent.
The visit led to debate among Taiwan's people. The meeting happened before Trump plans to visit China in May.
Klear Note — Taiwan and China have been separate since 1949. China claims Taiwan as its own territory. The Kuomintang party generally favors closer ties with China.
